The workplace

We start our Visions of Britain 2020 series by looking at work and employment. This will be done through two reports, the first of which envisions what the workplace will look like a decade from now.

Our findings indicate that the workplace will be starkly different to today. The changes will be structural and permanent, creating a workplace that will offer opportunity to many but not all.

The 2020 workplace will be defined by a polarisation of jobs that has created two groups – the elite and the excluded. The elite, a growing band of well-educated workers will strive to improve their skills and will enjoy more power and a way of working that seems alien to us today. On the other side of the polarised workforce will be the excluded – an apathetic group, mostly young males, with few skills and little hope.

How these changes affect the way we work, they way we train and the way business itself functions are addressed in this, the first of our Visions of Britain 2020.
