Retirement – the start of a new career

As a woman born between 1950 and 1955 I’ve always known I wouldn’t get State Pension at 60.  Widowed at 45 I was not left a spouse’s pension and decided then I would need to do something about funding my later years.

Too late to save as much as I would need, I decided to find a way of working part time in retirement.  Five years later I qualified as a counsellor.  Throughout my training I volunteered and I continue to practice in readiness for my (current) state retirement age.  By the way – I worked full time all through my training.

Because nothing is written in stone my message is the same however old you are: plan ahead.  Envisage as many outcomes as possible and prepare for as many as you can.  Some people think the world owes them a living.  Others are just happy to live in the world.
